Ferrara (English)

The moated medieval Estense Castle built for the Este family stands imposingly in the centre of the city, while Palazzo Schifanoia, (whose name literally means 'escape from boredom') was where the court went to wile away its boring winter days: both of which are just a small taste of Ferrara's beauty.
Art is home at the Palazzo dei Diamanti ehere exhibitions of internationally renowned paintings are held.

Every day there are buses that take you from Comacchio to the centre of Ferrara in just under and hour.

.... "And what about a drive to Ferrara? here are two easy routes by car ."

Direct route: from Comacchio 50km on the highway. Beware of the speed limit...90km!
Do not take the first indication for Ferrara but continue for 4 km and exit at the second.
Turn right at the stop sign - you are in Via Bologna - continue straight on, go past the shopping center, the railway crossing and the bridge over the river Po di Volano.
You'll come to a roundabout that takes you back again - it's ok! Turn right just before the bridge, after 100mt there is a big car-park (you can't go into the old town) and there are clean toilets and bicycle rental.

1st panoramic itinerary
: From Comacchio follow the green signs indicating the highway, but continue straight on. Go past Massafiscaglia till you come to Tresigallo.
The rationalist architecture of Tresigallo is a unique example of its kind. Upon entering the town passing the tall columns of the sports field, stop and take a look at the unusual fountain PAN in the centre of the large D-shaped square. (D=Duce) surrounded by a large colonnade to protects its citizens from the rain.

2nd panoramic itinerary: from Comacchio do not follow the green signs for Ferrara, instead follow the directions to Ostellato to the small village of San Vito, its Antica Pieve was built in the year 1027dc. A worthy, but very surprising visit.

Curiosity: Ferrara is the first city to have a modern urbanistic-planning.
It was invented by Biagio Rosetti in 1492 calling it the Erculean Addition - an enlargement of the wall's city limits. Not only, the main straight roads were cut at right angles to secondary ones. An example of this is in New York with its Streets and Avenues.
